Going back to the dark was faster than he thought. He does not mind.

Desmond is used to it; since it all began, he has learnt to welcome the dark as the colour of protection. This is, in fact, a naïve illusion — it’s more the colour of secrets too hard to keep, of yet another hiding place, bound, sooner or later, to be discovered and left.

But dark is familiar, and it has become his own shadow for a while — all that is left of his life is enclosed in it, in his mysteries, in his escape.

It is hard, even now, to tell what exactly he is running from. Maybe from the freedom he could never really have — the bastards will find him, again and again, as long as they need him alive — or, maybe, from the certainty of death, with the purpose, a purpose not his, to preserve himself.

Because in the end — and the certainty burns, painful, in his blood and his chest — that is what the whole jazz is really about. What is written in him, what cannot be erased in any way. When it comes to it, they care.

But he still refuses to believe that some piece of DNA could enclose, and entirely, what Desmond Miles really is.

He won’t fall asleep. The excitement is too much; and then there is always Rebecca, with her half-lights and her screens, with her face forever lit by the certainties she tries to find in them.

If only she could read his mind in different ways — if only any of them could find a way, or the time, to answer the questions he leaves unspoken.

However, it is always good to hear them talk. So far away from the world most people belong to, even Shaun and Lucy’s bickering about directions becomes a certainty.

He wonders what they are seeing from there. As for him, he does not feel the need to look outside. It is all printed in his mind; the green expanses without an end, the hills, maybe dotted with ugly buildings of today, and the roads where his ancestors, so long ago, galloped and fought from the bottom of their hearts.

It may be dark in there; but beyond the truck there is a night, and Desmond knows there might even be a future.

It’s the first actual result in so long — they have a concrete lead, and may soon dig up the truth on their own. He may find himself, in just a few hours, with his destiny right there, solid between his fingers.

He is scared, there is no denying it. Even when closest to him, his companions will have to leave him alone. Yet, for the very first time, this journey feels like the end.

And inside that one weak smile, on his long way to the Eternal City, Desmond holds the small chance of believing it.
Hello, AC friends. It's been a very long time. And since my ACR copy is not with me, I still have two games to play. But... yes, of course I am going to come back to the fandom full force as soon as I am caught up! I miss writing about AC too much.
Have a little angsty one-shot for Brotherhood. That ending killed me.
and not just me.
