“What is that thing?”

In the garden of light, unsure about time and place of the event they are witnessing, all men turn to their leader. Altaïr does not turn, nor can he find his voice.

The floating mystery in front of him is the most familiar sight to greet him today, among the ashes of this reverse Masyaf he treads on. It gives him the feeling of a riddle he has always lived within – a question and an answer, joined in one.

The others merely watch, in silence. To him, to the one it has chosen, the face of this sphere tells the first words of divine secrets.

Not just like he remembered it, not all known – still, to his eyes, this is a timeless map. Just beyond the outlines he understands, Altaïr can follow a golden net of points; it draws fragments of memories, a greater, long lost geometry.

He reaches for the image with his fingers, reverent, as if it could crack to pieces any second. Whether it is an illusion or not, he cannot tell. But the light of the Piece shines true, and so do its revelations – they show how many truths, near and far, are yet to be unearthed.

In a heartbeat, he knows The essence of this sphere is not distant at all. It is the very same tale, written in another language, the blood and breath he shares with all people – a thread which binds him to every town, every human being, making them a single living creature.

The answer escapes Altaïr's lips before he can control them.

“It is the world, Malik,” he whispers. “It is our world.”
My entry for the latest :iconvisionaryassassins: contest, We'll Always Remember visionaryassassins.deviantart.… .

This contest was made for me. Not saying this because I want to sound arrogant or selfish; what I mean is that the theme could match no other game than Assassin's Creed. The Ubisoft creation that made me a gamer, gave me new friends, new stories, new emotions. I'll never be grateful enough for this game, and this little contribution struggles to prove it.

My original plan was to describe the whole atmosphere of the first game, as seen through Altaïr's eyes. Everything, in fact, made this game important and unforgettable to me: our grumpy protagonist, Malik, Kadar, the music, the sights, the storyline. Still, I was afraid it would not fit the theme enough.

I described the ending that meant so much to me, trying to convey all the emotional implications it drew for both the Assassins and me. I spent two years of my fanwriter's career studying what that choice and that sight could cause in the Brotherhood's future, imagining several different scenarios that all started from the Piece of Eden. What other moment could I capture to describe the whole meaning of this story?

Since the ending, to me, Assassin's Creed became a storytelling perspective. And my future growth as a writer and a fan is all due to the first ideas this game gave me.

Enjoy!
